The men in the Old Stone Age engaged in primitive hunting and learned a labor skill steadily in very difficult conditions.  Hunting was the most important means to maintain their life and family.  But, since hunting techniques and tools were not developed yet, it was a struggle at the risk of their life with fears.  They performed the hunting ritual to console the dead animals' spirit by them and also celebrated their success in hunting by making sculptures using animals' bones and horns .

The sculpture relied on the power of a charm and also became the origin of artistic activities and primitive religion.  The representative painting in this period is a wall painting in Gratte de Lascaux.
