1.Structure

The dolmen is composed of a capstone, supporting stone, grave facility, cover stone, grave room and a floor.

¢º Capstone : A huge stone exposed to the ground

¢º Supporting Stone : It is to protect the substructure by supporting the capstone and to make the capstone look more magnificent.  

¢º Grave Facilities : Piles of stones were laid or heaped up with rectangle, round or oval shapes around the grave room.  It is to indicate a grave boundary and to protect the grave room.

¢º Cover Stone : It covered the rectangle grave room to secure the burial space and to protect the corpse of the buried.  

¢º Grave Room : Since it is a main part of the dolmen sub structures, it was made elaborately as a foundation to subdivide the types of dolmens.

¢º Flooring : It is a facility to lay the corpse.  While flooring was made of wood, the remaining facilities were made by plate stone, flat natural stone and small crushed stones and gravel.

2.Types

There are several standards to distinguish the types of dolmens.  The types and kinds of dolmens were distinguished by their appearance in general.  

Since dolmens erected in an independent traditional culture of each region had a similar form by regions, they were divided into the northern and the southern styles, but as it was reported that the northern style was found at Jangsu and Gochang in Jeollabukdo where the southern regions of the Korean peninsula are and many dolmens of the southern type were found in North Korea and Yodong peninsula, they were divided into the table type, Paduk-board (Korean chessboard) type and the capstone type.

¢º Table Type dolme

It was also called 'the northern type' and is typical of 'dolmens' as the table shaped dolmen.
A stone chamber made of three or four well refined flat stones was built on the ground and a flat and huge capstone was raised over it.  Large northern styled dolmens were found only in Yodong peninsula and the Daedong basin in Korea and only one dolmen was erected on the hill or the mid-slope of a mountain.

¢º Paduk Board Type dolme(Base-type Dolmen)

It was a transformation of the table type dolmen.  The grave room was made basement with stone structure on the ground to indicate it.  It was called Paduk board type dolmen because of its shape similar to thick Paduk board.

¢º Capstone Type dolme

It was distributed most in the Korean peninsula.  The grave room was built in the earth and the capstone was raised as a grave cover and the supporting stone was not exposed above the earth.
This capstone type dolmen was assumed as a dolmen because it was different from other natural stones in processing, neighboring situation and the location of capstones.
