1. Value as the World Heritage Designation of the dolmens in Hwasun, Gochang and Ganghwa as the World Cultural Heritage was very meaningful for recognition of their cultural value and preservation of cultural properties. The World Cultural Heritages are valuable asset to be preserved for ourselves and our descendants. Cultural heritages have the precious value in many aspects. For instance, they have cultural, educational and scientific values, economic value to be used for tourism resources including leisure and aesthetic uses. Dolmen which is one of a typical grave in the Bronze Age was distributed in the world and its period and types are different from regions. Korea has about 30,000 dolmens scattered in the whole country. Hwasun, Gochang and Ganghwa Dolmen Sites registered as the World Heritage recently have the highest density and variety of dolmens and are considered as the important relics to trace the formation and development of dolmens and they also have unique features incomparable to those in Europe, China and Japan. 2. Scientific Value Dolmen is very important for scientific researches. Cultural heritages scattered in every region are vivid historical data showing life history and local culture of commoners who are not recorded in historical books. Dolmen is the typical grave in the Bronze Age in Korea and it is very important to infer the social, economic and cultural aspects of those days.
