The Megalithic Culture means that people who have specific objectives construct structures using natural or artificially produced stone to use them as idols or tombs. Megalith means stone used for structures or monuments and megalithic structures are made of stone by people. The Megalithic Culture includes stone tombs accompanied by stone coffins or tombs made of piled stone as well as dolmens, menhirs, and structures made of stone.

However, in general, the Megalithic Culture is confined to monuments or megalithic tombs of the prehistoric age.

Megalithic structures were pursued for religious and social objectives or they were tombs or monuments. Therefore, according to regions, their size, structure, and shape varied. It means that they were built based on regional social and traditional background.

Dolmens, menhirs, lining stone (Yeolseok), and stone statues are representative in this culture.

¢º Dolmens : They represent megalithic culture. To build them, a chamber is made underground or on the surface, on which huge capstones are laid.

¢º Menhirs : One piece of stone is erected vertically to build them. They also represent the Megalithic Culture. They can be easily found at villages in our country.

¢º Stone Line: Menhirs are erected in a line or a few lines. In particular, the stone line in Bretagne, France is representative, but no stone line has been found in our country.

¢º Stone Circle : Menhirs are arranged in one or two circles. The stonehenge in England is representative.

¢º Stone Statue : Stone on which figures such as faces of people are described is erected. Buksoo ( totem poles ), Dolharubang in Jeju and monuments erected in front of tombs are common examples. Stone Buddha statues that are commonly seen in temples or temple sites are another example.
